HOUSTON—More than 100 local labor leaders and union members from across eight major unions representing nearly 50,000 Houston area workers will rally to support Mayor Sylvester Turner is his bid for re-election as well as Council Member Robert Gallegos, a champion of labor, seeking re-election in District I. Our unions represent working class Houstonians from across industries, including janitors; hotel and airport workers; rail, transit and aviation transportation workers; building and construction workers; plumbers; public employees and more. The rally will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Seafarers International Union hall at 625 N. York Street.
Our joint unions rally will feature special guests Mayor Turner, Council Member Robert Gallegos and SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry.
Working class Houstonians are standing together in their unions to build political power by ensuring they have a voice at City Hall. This local election is the most competitive in recent memory, and every vote counts in these tight races for candidates that are championing progressive values that working-class families depend on. Throughout the election cycle, unions have endorsed and actively canvassed, phone banked and conducted ride to the poll programs to ensure working people have access to and are engaged with the electoral process so that, together, we can shape a progressive future that centers workers’ rights, immigrant rights and racial justice. Workers will get out the vote after the rally.
